Lady Bruins Overpower the Pelicans

Coach Chris Schofield’s Lady Bruins were back on the basketball court today at the Farwest/Skyline Crossover tournament at North Valley High School with something to prove, that Friday’s overtime loss is not who they are. Unfortunately for the Klamath Union Pelicans, they were next on the list.

The 6-6 Pelicans came into the game with the same game plan as the Henley Hornets, to drive their offense game aggressively into the paint and put somebody in foul trouble. The strategy seemed to work early on as Friday’s hero freshman forward Lexi Schofield was in foul trouble within minutes of the first quarter, collecting 2 quick fouls.

This put Schofield on the bench and the Pelicans immediately went into the lane with their large junior center Kayleigh Haupt #42 who finished with 23 points in their first meeting in early December. The Lady Bruins quickly had 4 team fouls in the first period as they struggled to maintain a presence under the basket.

The Lady Bruins were determined to not be intimidated and continued to force the Pelicans to fight for everything under the hoop as senior center Brianna Humphrey and junior forward Chloe McCrae denied Pelican center Haupt any easy looks at the basket.

Senior guard Abby Farmer had 6 of her 8 points in the half in the 2nd quarter with 3 pointers from senior guard Makaila Holmes and freshman forward Lexi Schofield as the Lady Bruins went into the locker room leading the Pelicans 20-16.

In the third period the Lady Bruins would go on a 15-6 run and take control of the game. Coach Schofield said “Offensively, we were much more balanced. Not necessarily in who scored points, but in how we got them”. “We are often real one-dimensional and rely almost exclusively on 3 pointers” he went on to say.

The Pelicans would make a run in the fourth period as the Lady Bruins were outscored 18-13, but the Lady Bruins lead was too much for the Pelicans to overcome. Defense in the lane and under the basket was the key as the combination of senior center Brianna Humphrey, junior forward Chloe McCrae and freshman forward Lexi Schofield held Pelican center Kayleigh Haupt to just 5 points in the game.

The Lady Bruins had 8 players in the scoring column with Abby Farmer again leading all scorers with 23 points, Lexi Schofield and Sidney Alexander with 5 points, with Brianna Humphrey and Chloe McCrae adding 4 points each.

The Lady Bruins went on to win the game 48-39 and will go into season play Friday night at home on a high note against a 7-6 Douglas team at 6:00 pm.
