The Brookings-Harbor Lady Bruin varsity basketball team played their first home game Tuesday night and ran away with a completely one-sided effort. The Bandon Lady Tigers rolled into town and were mauled by the Lady Bruins in an early pre-season match-up.
Clearly, coach Chris Schofield has the Lady Bruins on the right track as the Lady Bruins out ran Bandon from the tip-off. The Lady Bruins pressed the Lady Tigers in their signature 2-3 defense and shut down any attempts Bandon attempted to put together as the pressure defense only allowed one basket in the first quarter. As keeping possession of the ball became Bandons first priority, the Lady Bruins put up 20 points in the first period led by Lexi Schofield who hit for 8 points in the period.
The second period was much of the same, the Lady Tigers couldn’t break the full court press, as the Lady Bruins turned up the intensity. Senior guard Mickey Fulton #2 turned up the defense refusing let the Lady Tigers come up for air by challenging passing lanes and forcing the Lady Tigers to pick up their dribble allowing the rest of the defense to close gaps. Both Fulton and junior guard Sidney Alexander #11 led scorers in the 2nd quarter with each sinking a 3 pointer and hitting 5 points each of the 21 that the Bruins put up in the period.
In the second half, the Lady Bruins came out with even more intensity to be sure that the Lady Tigers could not mount anything close to a comeback. The 2-3 press frustrated Bandon again who could not hit from the outside and were not allowed to function in the paint. On the offensive end, the Lady Bruins sophomore forward Sierra Fitzhugh #00 broke out for 9 points and led all scorers with 16 points with hustle and inside play under the basket.
The Lady Bruins would dominate for the entirety of the contest putting 82 points on the board while holding Bandon to just 28 points on the night. Coach Schofield told the Wild Coast Compass that “Everything we did tonight started with our defense. The kids played with great energy and were really sound in their rotations.” We asked the coach what he is trying to accomplish in these preseason games, “3 things” he said “Settle on a rotation of players. Play our way into game shape and iron out any kinks along the way.”
The Lady Bruins will be on the road next weekend at Hidden Valley High School to play a series of games in the Evergreen Tournament.
