After dropping their first pre-season matches to McKinleyville and North Valley last week, it appears that local rivals inspire this Lady Bruin volleyball team.
A different Lady Bruin volleyball team walk onto the floor Tuesday evening with a different level of energy and visible determination that propelled the Lady Bruins to their first win of the pre-season against Hwy. 101 rival Del Norte Lady Warriors.
Junior Sierra Fitzhugh #5 set the tone for the Lady Bruins with 1 ace, 3 kills, 6 blocks and 11 digs. The communication problems in past games were non-existent in Tuesdays matches, and the team serving game was very good. Junior Shelby Jirsa led the team with 6 aces followed by Cartyr Fitahugh with 4.
In volleyball, ‘digs’ are the hustle play, and as a team the Lady Bruins recorded 47 digs on the night. Junior Gracie Harms #11 led the way with 12, followed by Sierra Fitzhugh #5 with 11, Shelby Jirsa #4 with 8, and sophomore Jo Pryor with 7.
The Lady Bruins also played very well as a team and Junior Shelby Jirsa #4 led the team with 13 assists as the Lady Bruins took 3 of 5 from the Del Norte Lady Warriors.
Lady Bruins head Coach Lorinda Shew said after the game that she believes that this is the first time in at 6 years that the Lady Bruins beat Del Norte.
The Lady Bruins will be on the road Thursday traveling to McKinleyville for a 6:30pm rematch for the loss to McKinleyville last Tuesday.
