After suffering a two-loss losing streak, Coach Schofield and his Lady Bruins walked onto the hardwood with pride and determination, ready to take on the 4-5 South Umpqua Lady Lancers.
In the first quarter #20 Lexee Murray led the way for the Lady Bruins with 5 points from a basket and a 3 pointer. Lexi Schofield followed that with a 3 pointer of her own and determined drives to the basket that got her the free throw line where she went 1 for 2. Mickey Fulton #2 joined the fun hitting a bucket for 2 and center Chloe McCrae #44 has evidently found her range as she hit another 3 pointer after hitting the deep shot in the previous game Tuesday night. But the Lady Lancers were able to run with the Lady Bruins in the first period as they got 4 players in the scorebook in the first and matched the Lady Bruins basket for basket going into the half time break tied at 14-14.
The second quarter is where the Lady Bruins separated themselves from the Lady Lancers with relentless defense and hustle. Sidney Alexander #11 upped the tempo as the smallest player on the court repeatedly drove into the lane hitting baskets and getting to the line. Alexander hit a basket, a 3 pointer and was a perfect 4 for 4 from the line in the period. But in the second it was the defense that rose to the occasion and held the Lady Lancers to just 9 points in the period giving the Lady Bruins a 30-23 lead going into the locker room at the half time break.
Coming out in the third period has been a rough spot for the Lady Bruins all season long, but not tonight. Coach Schofield has adjusted with the press to be sure their energy level starts the period high and carries them into the fourth. As the Lady Bruins applied relentless defense, they also showcased their outside shooting as all the Lady Bruin scoring came from the beyond the 3 point line. Lexi Schofield hit two 3 pointers, Sidney Alexander hit a 3 pointer, and Chloe McCrae showed she could play that game too and hit one of herself as the Lady Bruins hot for 12 points all from beyond the arc. The Lady Bruins defense allowed only three Lady Lancers to score in the period and held them to just 8 points going into the final period.
In the fourth period with the Lady Bruins holding a 42-31 lead, the Lady Bruins shut down any hope the Lady Lancers had of bridging the gap an getting back in the game as they only allowed 4 Lady Lancer points in the period while putting up another 11 points for themselves in the final period. Again, Sidney Alexander hit another 3 and a basket to lead all scorers in the game with 17 points on the night.
After the game Coach Schofield said “We were a little shaky early on, but you could just see their confidence grow as the game wore on.
We were more locked in defensively than we’ve been in a few weeks. Especially in the 2nd half.” “I was pretty proud of them tonight.” he went on to say.
The Lady Bruins went on to take the win 53-35 and will have their final league game next Tuesday night February 2nd at home at 6:00pm.
