The Lady Bruin varsity volleyball team led by head coach Lorinda Shew took to the floor Monday evening in a non-league contest against the Lady Panthers from Gold Beach.
As play has progressed so far in this 2021 season, confidence in the Lady Bruin team has grown with every set. On Monday evening, after dropping a heart break match to Sutherlin on Saturday, an aggressive, confident and determined Lady Bruin team attacked the Lady Panthers from the first serve and did not let up until they had secured a 3 straight set win.
Consistent serving has really helped the Lady Bruins by putting points on the board and extending leads. This has allowed the team to be more confident and less worried about costly mistakes. The team is now striking the ball with power and enough accuracy forcing the ball to be played, creating errors on the opposition and putting points on the board. Senior Shelby Jirsa #4, led all players with 13 aces Monday against the Lady Panthers.
Play at the net has been fast and furious, and the Lady Bruins have shown they are as strong as any team they have face so far. Senior Sierra Fitzhugh #5, who also had 6 aces, led the team with 10 kills, followed by sophomore Ashlyn Schofield #8 with 7, and Senior Shelby Jirsa #4 who recorded 6 kills in the match.
Defensively at the net, junior #3 Skylar Gallagher continues to make an impact with another block. Sierra Fitzhugh, Ashlyn Scofield and junior Jordan Crosby have been fearless at the net and the four of them have proven to be a formidable force above the tape.
The Lady Bruins will host the Douglas Lady Trojans Tuesday night, “We are expecting solid competition against Douglas tomorrow night” coach Shew said, “and the girls know they need to be steady and consistent to get that win.” “Monday night” she went on to say, “we set the goal to play our own game and to stay pretty even, which the girls succeeded in.” “In the past we, have backed off or played tight when it’s really on the line.., we are working on staying aggressive and pushing through to the finish.., we will need that against Douglas.”
