Still reeling from last Friday’s 3 point loss to the Cascade Christian Lady Challengers, a much different Lady Bruin team came out Tuesday night and showed no mercy to the 4-10 Lady Trojans from Douglas.

The Lady Trojans were victimized early as a focused and determined Lady Bruin team dismantled the Lady Trojans from tip-off to final whistle. The story of the night for the Lady Bruins was their defense, pressing and trapping a Lady Trojan team that did not get on the scoreboard until mid-way through the second period.

Six Lady Bruins scored in the first period led by junior forward Lexi Schofield #1 who hit for 4 points and junior center Sierra Fitzhugh #00 who sunk a 3 pointer from the top of the key. As the Lady Bruin 2-3 defense pressed the Lady Trojans into mistakes and turn overs, the Lady Bruins ran up a 15-0 lead by the end of the first period.

With a commanding 15-0 lead to start the second quarter, the Lady Bruins continued to pound the ball into the lane forcing a frustrated Lady Trojan team to foul in an effort to slow the Lady Bruin offense. Sierra Fitzhugh got to the line 6 times in the period hitting 2 of 6 and also hitting 2 baskets for 6 points in the period. Junior forward Shelby Jirsa #5 established herself by working her way to 4 points off of 2 mid-range jumpers.

After taking a 30-10 lead into the locker room at the half, the Lady Bruins came out in the 3rd quarter and picked up right where they left off. Junior guard Lexee Murray #20 and again Shelby Jirsa led the Lady Bruins with 4 points each after Murray hit a 3 pointer and sunk a free throw. Sidney Alexander, Lexi Schofield and Sierra Fitzhugh also found the basket in the period as the Lady Bruins put another 13 points on the scoreboard.

With a now commanding lead of 43-16 going into the final quarter, the Lady Bruins continued their assault getting another 5 players in the scoring column. Led by junior guard Lexee Murray #20 who followed her 3rd period performance with 6 more points in the fourth from two baskets and two free throws. Sidney Alexander #11 and Sierra Fitzhugh #00 both hit 3’s but Fitzhugh also hit a basket and a free throw for 6 points in the fourth. Lady Bruins Tilly Peters #4 and senior guard Avana Pettus #10 both scored in the final period as the Lady Bruins finished with 62 points on the night while holding the Lady Trojans to just 35 points in the game.

Talking with Lady Bruin head coach Chris Schofield after the game, he said “Easily this was our most complete defensive effort tonight. It seems crazy to say on a night when we put up 62 on the board, but I didn’t think we shot the ball well. We missed a ton of free throws, layups and threes. But our defense kept us going in spite of all that.., it was really good to see a real strong defensive game out of the girls tonight.” he went on to say.
The Lady Bruins take their 1-1 league record on the road this Friday as they travel to Sutherlin to take on the 2-0 Lady Bulldogs Friday night at 7:00pm.
