Head coach Chris Schofield and the BHHS girls varsity basketball started their 2021 season quietly on the road last Tuesday in a non-league game against Myrtle Point, and then traveled to Marshal last Thursday handily defeating both teams in a warm-up to season play which started Monday, at St. Mary’s.
The Lady Bruins established the inside early against the Lady Crusaders as senior Sierra Fitzhugh #00 outscored the entire Lady Crusader team in the opening quarter hitting for 12 of the Lady Bruins 18 points to take 18-8 lead after the first quarter.
The Lady Bruin defense overwhelmed St. Mary’s throughout, holding the Lady Crusader offense to one opportunity per possession and then running on their defense after every change of possession.
In the second period senior Lexi Schofield #1 got into the game hitting for 9 points including a 3 pointer. Senior Shelby Jirsa #5 hit a 3 pointer on her way to 5 points in the quarter as Fitzhugh moved outside the arc after working inside in the first and added a 3 pointer as the Lady Bruins put up 20 more points to take a 38-18 lead into the locker room at the half.
To start the 3rd, the Lady Bruins turned up the defense smothering the Lady Crusaders and allowing only three St. Mary baskets in the quarter for 6 points. The Lady Bruins did not slow down, Lexi Schofield continued hit buckets, putting up another 10 points. Jirsa and Fitzhugh both hit 3’s and the Lady Bruin offense got sophomore Marissa Scott into the scoring column feeding her for 6 points.
With a commanding 60-27 lead going into the final period of play, the Lady Bruins coasted to a 72-33 win to start league play. Senior #00 Sierra Fitzhugh lead the way with 23 points hitting 7 shots, 2 three pointers, and going 3 of 4 from the line. Senior Lexi Schofield #1 hit for 21 points off of 7 shots, 2 three pointers and going 1 for 1 at the line. Senior Tilly Peters #2 quietly had 6 points and senior Shelby Jirsa #5 finished with 2 buckets and 2 three pointers for 10 of the Lady Bruins 72 points in the contest.
Coach Schofield told the Compass “We started slow and it took us a while to settle down and finish around the rim. But our tempo was great. We took care of the ball and got good shots throughout the game.”
The Lady Bruins will be at Cascade Christian to take on the Lady Challengers Thursday evening.
