The Lady Bruins were on the road Thursday traveling to Medford to take on the Lady Challengers of Cascade Christian High School. Coach Schofield and the 4-0 Lady Bruins have started the 2021 season dominating the competition averaging just over 50 points a game.
But the Lady Bruin defense has been the overlooked aspect of the team so far this season, holding teams to just 31 points on average, and the Lady Bruins imposed themselves on the Lady Challengers from whistle to whistle Thursday.
Faith Burton led the way offensively in the first period hitting for 5 of the Lady Bruins 11 points to open the game. The Brookings-Harbor defense allowed only one Cascade Christian player to score in the period, holding the Lady Challengers to just 5 points in the first.
Going into the 2nd period holding an 11-5 lead, #1 Lexi Schofield and Marissa Scott #34 both scored for the Lady Bruins, but senior forward Shelby Jirsa #5 found her range behind the 3 point arc and hit three 3 pointers and a basket for 11 of the Lady Bruins 16 points in the 2nd. Again the Lady Bruins allowed only Cascade Christian shooter on the scoreboard, holding the Lady Challengers to just 8 points to take a 13-27 lead into the locker-room at the half.
In the 3rd, the Lady Challengers pressed the Lady Bruins and Brookings-Harbor fed senior Fitzhugh for 7 3rd quarter points as Jirsa hit her fourth 3 pointer of the game giving the Lady Bruins a 21-37 lead going into the final period of play. In the fourth the Lady Bruin defense allowed 13 Cascade Christian points from four Lady Challenger shooters. However, senior Tilly Peters #2 broke out for 5 points hitting a 3 pointer and a basket to lead the Lady Bruins in the final period with 5 of the Lady Bruins 12 fourth quarter points on their way to a 34-49 Lady Bruin win.
The 4-0 Lady Bruins will be at home for their 2021 season opener Friday night as they host the 2-2 Lady Trojans traveling to Brookings from Winston,Oregon.
