Coming off a disappointing season opener against Sutherlin, head coach Brian Carlson and his BHHS varsity girls soccer team got themselves back on track with a non-league tune up match against a strong Del Norte Lady Warrior team Monday afternoon.
The Lady Bruins started the contest with a high energy attack that kept the playing field on the Lady Warrior half of the field, with physical challenges, and short control passing. Although both teams had opportunities in front of each others goal, the majority of play was in front of the Del Norte goal.
The Lady Bruin defense turned back Del Norte attacks through out the first half, and Lady Bruin keeper, freshman Destini Robb-Parke, came off her line to shut down fast break opportunities, keeping the score 0-0 going into the half-time break.
The pace picked up to start the second half of play, and the Lady Warriors spread their offense and attempted to break the Lady Bruin defensive trap repeatedly, but the central defenders of the Lady Bruins refused to break, forcing the ball back up-field for the the offensive attack.
The score remained 0-0 until approximately 15:00 minutes into the second half, when the Lady Bruins worked the ball up the left side to senior mid-fielder Megan Pearson who hit junior Zoe Carlson #11 with an instep pass putting Carlson in position to score from the left corner of the goal box, putting the Lady Bruins up 1-0.
Minutes later, senior striker Hannah James #5 worked her way into a fast break position, breaking the Del Norte offensive trap and out running the defense for a shot to the lower right corner, giving the Lady Bruins a 2-0 win.
The Lady Bruins will take the 2-0 win into their next contest scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, traveling to Coquille/Myrtle Point to take on the Lady Red Devils at 3:30pm.
