The Lady Bruins went on the road to the 9-0 Marshfield Pirates to play their last leagues season game. The meeting with Marshfield is the second of the season with Marshfield handing the Lady Bruins their first loss of the season.
That was also the only loss for the Lady Bruins and they looked to return the favor Friday night. However, the Lady Pirates were playing for an undefeated season and were motivated to keep the Lady Bruins off the scoreboard, which is exactly what they did for the entire first quarter until midway through the second period.
“Their length and pressure really overwhelmed us early,” said Coach Schofield.
The Lady Pirates had three players get in the scorebook in the first period scoring 15 points in the period and holding the Lady Bruins scoreless. With just over 5 minutes left in the first half, Abby Farmer put herself and the Bruins on the scoreboard as the Lady Bruins score 11 points in the quarter and go into the halftime break trailing by 15.
The second half had the Lady Bruins come out running cutting the lead to 23-28 after a sophomore guard Sidney Alexander baseline 3 pointer. But an on-court injury to a Marshfield player stopped play for an extended period of time, killing all momentum the Lady Bruins had after closing the gap to just 5.
When asked if there was anything he could take from the game, he said “I really liked the grit our kids showed battling back, but we just couldn’t sustain anything offensively. We had it down to 5 in the 3rd and then we went on another long lull when we could least afford it.”
After the delay the very fast Lady Pirates applied the smothering defense they had applied in the first half and the Lady Bruins just could not make up the 15 point lead from the Lady Bruin’s scoreless first period.
The Lady Bruins would go on to tie the Lady Pirates in scoring in the second half with both teams putting up 23 points in the second as Marshfield coasted to a 34-49 win.
The Lady Bruins will play again next Friday evening at home in their first post-season game with more information available next week.
