Friday night was basketball night for the Brookings-Harbor Lady Bruins as the Lady Bruins started their postseason play hosting the Philomath Lady Warriors of the 4A-4 Oregon West Conference.
Coach Schofield, who earlier in the week said we are “just trying to fine-tune some things” during our practices, brought a relaxed Lady Bruin team to the hardwood floor, but when the ball went up for the tip-off it was clearly game on.
The Lady Bruins came out running with smothering defense and scoring on their mind. Senior guard Abby Farmer #00 ran up the score early all on her own as she put 10 points on the board before Philomath found the basket. Freshman forward Lexi Schofield #1 hit a 3 pointer and basket while senior center Brianna Humphrey #4 got on the board on the way to a 17 point first quarter.
After only letting three Lady Warrior players in the scoring column in the first period and allowing only 6 points, the Lady Bruins went back to work, continuing the disrupting defense.
Again Abby Farmer led all scoring in the second period hitting two 3 pointers, a basket and going 1 of 4 from the line. Lexi Schofield added 5 points as sophomore guard Sidney Alexander put in two 3 pointers from the baseline. The Lady Bruins, after hitting for 20 points in the second, took a 37-15 lead into the locker room at the halftime break.
In the third period, a lapse in defense resulted in the Lady Bruins being outscored 13-15 by a Lady Warrior team that wanted to make sure Brookings-Harbor understood they weren’t done yet.
Sophomore guard Avana Pettus #10 hit a 3 pointer, senior guard #20 Makaila Holmes found the basket for a 3 pointer, senior guard Malia Leddy #5 had a basket and Farmer added 4 more.
As the Lady Bruins enjoyed a 30 point lead late in the game, senior guard Abby Farmer #00 reached another milestone in Lady Bruins Basketball history as she passed former Lady Bruin Becky (Wilson) Watwood’s all-time scoring mark.
Becky (Wilson) Watwood held the Lady Bruin scoring record for 31 years and responded during the game through social media to Abby’s achievement saying “She is proud of Abby and has been watching her for years. She expects great things from her in the future! Way to go Abby!” Watwood put 1422 points up for the Bruins in her career, and Abby Farmers 31 points on the night pushed her past that mark putting her at 1425 career points in the Lady Bruin uniform.
Abby Farmer led all scorers in the game with 3 points on the night from four 3 pointers, five baskets, and going 9 of 13 from the free throw line. Freshman Lexi Schofield followed with 13 points on the night from two 3 pointers, two baskets and hitting 3 of 4 from the line. Junior guard Mickey Fulton #2 hit a 3 pointer, as the Bruins had 8 players in the scorebook on the night and left with the 68-38 victory advancing themselves to the next round.
“It’s always exciting to win playoff games. I felt that our fast start really helped us settle in and calm our nerves” Coach Schofield said after the game.
“Now we get one more week of practice. One more week to improve. One more week to prepare for one of the top teams in the state” he went on to say.
