The Lady Bruin volleyball team traveled to Winston Oregon Friday for a double header against the Lady Bulldogs from North Bend, and the Lady Trojans of Douglas.
The first game of the afternoon was against the 3-0 Lady Bulldogs from North Bend, and the Lady Bruins continued to have excellent individual performances, but just could not put together any consistent scoring opportunities.
The three seniors continue to lead going into the final game of the regular season with Gracie Harms #14 recording 6 digs, 5 kills and three service aces. Senior Shelby Jirsa #4 had 7 kills and a block, while Sierra Fitzhugh #5 racked up 18 kills, 13 digs and 3 blocks. Sophomore Ashlyn Schofield #8 had 7 kills, and junior Jordan Pryor #10 had 4 serving aces and 1 dig.
But the Lady Bruins could only manage 1 set win in the match despite the individual efforts.
In the afternoon match, the Lady Bruins played the Douglas Lady Trojans, and again the Lady Bruin seniors led the way. Sierra Fitzhugh #5 was all over the court with 17 kills, 8 digs, and 3 blocks. Not to be outdone, Shelby Jirsa #4 recorded 33 assists, 9 kills and 3 aces of her own, and Gracie Harms #14 had 6 kills and 3 aces.
However, even after more improved individual and team play, the Lady Bruins could only get 1 set in the match, falling to the Lady Trojans 1-3.
Talking with coach Shew after matches, she told the Compass that “Overall, the girls played well, we were shooting for consistency and the girls did a good job of staying level and not having a lot of highs and lows. They fought hard every set and that last set against Douglas was quite a heart-breaker losing 26 to 24. Most of the entire set was point for point the score was within 3 to 4 points most of the way in each set.”
The Lady Bruins will close out their 2021 season at the home of a strong 5-2 Sutherlin Lady Bulldog team. “This will be a challenge,” Coach Shew said “but one we should be prepared for, and hope to win.”
