Klondike Fire Stalls after Cool Rainy Weather

After last weeks ‘red flag warnings’ with high winds, especially in the upper elevations, the Klondike Fire grew 10,000 acres from September 27th, reaching 167,033 acres before the seasons first substantial rains occurred on Saturday. Since Saturday, September 29th, the Klondike Fire has stalled and as of Monday, October 1st, showed no growth and remains at 167,033 acres.

Recent rain and cooler temperatures reduced fire activity in the past few days. Firefighters monitored locations of concern in the fire area and observed smoke only in the area of Breezy Creek near Montana Spring. Cool, damp weather is expected to continue, with rain showers predicted until midweek. Air quality is expected to remain good.

Firefighters located a trail into Indian Flat and continue to mop up along Indigo Creek. There was no fire growth yesterday in the Horse Sign Creek area.

No fire movement is anticipated today based on weather conditions. Today, crews will improve the BLM road 35-9-1 north of Brown’s Gulch as a check line, continue mop-up operations along Burnt Ridge Road (2308), and repair areas impacted by fire suppression activity on the west side of the fire.

Forest Road 23 (Bear Camp Road) remains open to public traffic. Travelers are urged to use caution when traveling in the fire area due to slippery conditions caused by recent rains, and increased traffic from firefighting activity and hunting season.

On Tuesday morning at 6 a.m. management of the Klondike West fire will be transferred to Northwest Incident Management Team #12. The teams will work closely together to ensure a smooth transition.
