Over the weekend, strong east winds and low humidity supported conditions for rapid wildfire growth tonight through Monday morning in areas where wildfire fuels are receptive.
Winds shifted from NNW to NNE Saturday afternoon, and as a result, an abrupt change from cooler marine air to hot downslope winds occurred. When the air began to descend down the hilly terrain, it compressed and as a result, it warmed and dried. Temperatures in the mid 60s quickly rose into the mid to upper 80s over the course of an hour. High temperatures over the area were 25 to 30 degrees above normal for this area, approaching high temperature records in the area set 30 years ago.
Due to these weather conditions, a rapid increase in fire activity occurred on the Klondike Fire, and a Level 3 “Go Now” evacuation has been in effect for the Oak Flats and Spud Road areas of the Agness community since Sunday afternoon with a Level 2 “Be Set” notice is in effect for residents along the 33 road in Agness.
