Klondike Fire Rages Again

Over the weekend, a red flag warning for high winds came to fruition as strong east winds and low humidity created conditions for rapid wildfire growth through Monday. The Klondike Fire, which has been a recognized blaze since July 15th, 2018, is now just 10 miles east of Agness Oregon, added 2,000 acres since Saturday afternoon, and now stands at 167,423 total acres.

Unusually warmer temperatures, low humidity and gusty winds across the fire yesterday afternoon caused an approximately 2000 acre spot fire near the North Fork of Indigo Creek. The Sheriff’s Office, in concurrence with fire officials, quickly made the determination that evacuations were appropriate for residents in the areas of Oak Flat, Spud Road, and along the 33 road in Agness and residents north of the Rogue River.

Today crews are on site, engaged in suppression activity. Additional resources have
been ordered, including aircraft, engines, Type 1 Interagency Hotshot Crews), and the State Fire Marshal’s Red IMT. An infrared flight has been ordered for tonight for a more accurate assessment of fire acreage.

Level 3 Evacuations remain in effect for Oak Flat, Old House, Spud Road and along the 33 road in Agness. Level 2 or ‘Be Ready’ is also still in effect for Agness residents north of the Rogue River.

A Red Cross Shelter for Evacuees has again been established at First Baptist Church, 29755 Turner St, Gold Beach, OR 97444. A community meeting for the residents of Agness is planned for either Tuesday or Wednesday at 2 p.m. The exact date and location are yet to be determined.
