Good news from the front lines of the Klamathon Fire as fire officials reported minimal if any growth in the Tuesday evening fire update. The Klamathon Fire stood at 36,500 acres Monday evening and Tuesday’s update showed no growth reporting the total acreage again at 36,500 total acres with containment reaching 55%.
Due to favorable weather conditions and decreased fire activity, the evacuation level for the Colestin Valley has been reduced to Level 1 “Be Ready.” No other changes have been made to the other evacuation zones at this time.
Minimal fire activity was observed Tuesday with the same behavior anticipated overnight into Wednesday morning. Good humidity recovery overnight is expected to help firefighters in containment efforts. Crews will continue to complete line on the east flank to mitigate the threat to Iron Gate Reservoir Estates. The Horseshoe Ranch Wildlife Area, Soda Mountain Wilderness and Cascade Siskiyou National Monument will remain threatened. The north and west flank will continue to have short range spotting in the timber stands when strong ridge top winds surface in the afternoons and will continue to threaten areas in Jackson County OR.
On Monday, July 9, 2018, while inspecting a structure suspected to have been destroyed by the Klamathon Fire, canines alerted to “cadavers”. After a preliminary investigation by the Siskiyou County Sheriff and investigators from CAL FIRE, no evidence of a deceased body was located in the rubble of the structure.
According to Sheriff Jon Lopey, “The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office forensic technician and CAL FIRE investigators examined the rubble of the destroyed structure and found no indications of a deceased person.” The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office will continue investigating the results of the canine alerts.
Thus far, one earlier fire-related fatality has been confirmed. The deceased was located near a Hornbrook residence that was heavily damaged by fire. An autopsy is being conducted on July 11, 2018, to assist investigators in determining the cause and manner of death. It may take several weeks to conclusively determine the cause of death, pending the return of toxicology and related reports.
