On Saturday, Medford Fire-Rescue responded to a small kitchen fire in a single-family residence.
The occupant was heating up some oil in a pan and left the stove unattended for an unspecified period of time. Upon return to the kitchen, he found active fire on the stove top, with flames advancing up the wall. He apparently tossed the pan across the room and then threw some pancake mix onto the fire, which did slow the fire down considerably.
The occupant’s foot was treated for a second degree burn on-scene by Medford Fire-Rescue personnel, which resulted from throwing the pan. There were no other reported injuries, and the home remains habitable.
A good reminder to never leave a stovetop unattended while cooking, and avoid oil and grease residue buildup on cooking surfaces. Keeping a metal lid nearby can be helpful for covering the pan immediately if the oil starts to smoke or burn.
