Another outstanding athlete has been selected to the Brookings Les Schwab ‘Star Student Athlete’ list of exemplary young local individuals.
Junior Kaleb Barnes is an outstanding long distance runner for the Brookings-Harbor track team finding elite status his freshman year crossing the finish line first in the district championships after finishing the 5k course in 17:08.
Former Cross Country coach Terry Axel told the Wild Coast Compass “Caleb is very easy to coach and a very mature runner for his age. Watching him at the state track meet you would not have thought he was a freshman.”
With COVID-19 ending school sports programs last year and having continued into the 2020-2021 school year, new Brookings-Harbor track team coach Jason Fulton who coached Kaleb in middle school has the team practicing and preparing, and tells us that “Kaleb excelled in 800m, 1500m, 3000m and mile relay and he has goals of improve on his excellent cross country times from previous seasons.”
Those are lofty expectations for this determined young man carrying a 3.5 GPA while working to finish as district champion his freshman year in the 1500m and 3000m, breaking the School record in both events as a freshman, before finishing third in the State in the 3000m and 5th in the state in the 1500m.
Congratulations Kaleb Barnes, keep reaching, and pace yourself.
