An investigation is being conducted by officials with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation regarding an alleged attempted homicide of a peace officer at Pelican Bay State Prison.
In a recent press release from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, early Thursday morning, January 30th, three incarcerated persons allegedly attacked a supervising Correctional Officer at approximately 7:15am, in one of the Pelican Bay State Prison dining halls with an inmate-manufactured weapon leaving an officer with a laceration and puncture wounds.
Staff used pepper spray on the three incarcerated persons identified as Jose Gonzalez, Richard Wilson, and Luis Torres, to quell the attack before an inmate-manufactured weapon was found at the scene and processed into evidence.
The officer was transported to an outside medical facility, for treatment of his injuries and was admitted for observation.
The three incarcerated persons, 38 year old Jose Gonzalez, sentenced to life with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder, evade or attempting to evade a peace officer while driving recklessly and intentional discharge of firearm, 32 year old Richard Wilson, sentenced to 14 years for DUI/bodily injury/one prior with enhancements for a prior felony conviction of a serious offense and inflicting great bodily injury, and 34 year old Luis Torres, sentenced to life with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder with second strike, intentional discharge of firearm causing GBI/death, were transferred to another institution for placement in restricted housing.
Prison officials are currently investigating the incident. The case will be referred to the Del Norte District Attorney’s Office for possible felony prosecution.
