Hwy. 101 Crash Takes a Life Tuesday Evening

Early Monday evening, September 23rd, a vehicle entered Hwy. 101 in the direct path of a motorcycle traveling southbound on Hwy. 101 causing a severe crash, taking one life and closing Hwy. 101 for approximately 3 hours.  

An individual operating a Harley Davidson motorcycle, traveling southbound on Hwy. 101, just before 6:40pm, when a Jeep Wrangler, operated by Shakiyla Bryant, entered Hwy. 101 from Mouth of Smith River Road directly in front of the motorcycle operator’s path of travel.  

The motorcycle operator was unable to avoid a collision with the Jeep Wrangler in the southbound lane of Hwy. 101, resulting in fatal injuries to the operator of the motorcycle, who was pronounced deceased on scene.

Due to the complexity of the crash, traffic from Hwy. 101 was diverted onto Ocean View Drive for approximately three hours.  

Alcohol is believed to be a factor, and the driver of the Jeep Wrangler, Shakiyla Bryan, was arrested for driving under the influence causing gross bodily injury.  This crash remains under investigation.
