On Friday, November 23, just before 7:30 pm, Oregon State Police Troopers, and emergency personnel from the Illinois Valley Fire District and Rural Metro Fire Department responded to the report of a two-vehicle crash on Hwy. 199 near Selma, OR.
Preliminary investigation revealed that a white 2005 Toyota Corolla, operated by 27 year old Briana Varela of Rogue River, had been reported as a reckless driver approximately 16 miles prior to the crash scene as she traveled southbound on Hwy 199 before crossing into the northbound lanes of travel and striking a northbound maroon 2018 Nissan Versa, operated by Elizabeth Real of the United Kingdom.
Hwy. 199 was closed in both directions for over an hour as three people had to be extricated with the jaws of life from the two vehicles. 27-year-old Briana Varela was transported to Three Rivers Medical Center before being flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington, where she was pronounced deceased from injuries sustained in the crash.
Elizabeth Real was transported to Three Rivers Medical Center and later flown to Riverbend Hospital in Eugene with serious injuries. Her passenger Kelly Karaba of Arcata, CA. was flown to Rogue Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.
Briana Varela had been reported as a reckless driver approximately 16 miles prior to the crash scene. Investigators would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the driving behavior or the crash. Anyone with information can call the Oregon State Police dispatch at 541-776-6111.
