Gov. Brown Announces Tighter COVID-19 Restrictions as Cases Continue to Rise

As International and National COVID-19 confirmed cases continue to spike, Oregon continued to follow suit averaging more than 600 new confirmed cases per day. Oregon now has 48,608 confirmed COVID-19 cases adding another 4,220 cases to its overall total in this past week as well as shattering it’s single day case number Thursday hitting 805 new cases in a single day, and then adding another 770 new cases on Friday, November 6th.

In light of the latest increases in new COVID-19 cases, Governor Kate Brown announced a “Two week pause on social activities to help stop the rapid spread of COVID-19”, the strictest measures the state has imposed since the initial “stay home, save lives” measures were implemented back in March.

“The two-week pause is intended to be a wake-up call or a call to action,” said Charles Boyle, the deputy communications director in the governor’s office. Currently, five counties, Umatilla, Malheur, Marion, Jackson and Multnomah have exceeded the new metrics threshold and will be put under the increased restrictions.

Five other counties, Washington, Baker, Clackamas, Union and Linn are also seeing cases rise at a rapid rate and the Oregon Health Authority plans to reevaluate its numbers on Monday and state leaders it’s likely some or all of those counties will also be added to the pause list. These 10 counties make up 73% of all of Oregons cases and more than 75% of all of Oregons new COVID-19 cases in the past week.

Again Gov. Brown states that “the recent increases are not the result of large workplace or school outbreaks, but instead suggest there’s widespread community transmission of the virus, in small social gatherings or one-on-one meetings.
