Additional information regarding Wednesday, February 16th, arrest of an armed suspect was released by the Gold Beach Police Department Friday detailing the incident and identifying the individual. .
Late Wednesday evening, a Gold Beach Police officer with a deputy from the Curry County Sheriff’s office attempted to make contact with Gold Beach resident, 42 year old Javier Munoz for questioning regarding an incident related to an allegation of menacing and unlawful use of a firearm that had occurred outside city limits.
Javier Munoz, a convicted felon, was located walking near the intersection of Hillcrest Street and Caughell Street in Gold Beach at approximately 9:00pm, Munoz, and was non-compliant. Officers observed a gun shaped bulge in his jacket pocket and after a tense exchange with officers, Munoz physically resisted arrest and ran from the scene while the officers and deputies gave chance and moved to intercept Munoz.
The chase, covering a couple of blocks, came to an end near Airport Way, where Munoz was taken into custody without further incident. A physical search of Munoz incident to arrest failed to produce a gun and the suspect pocket had been emptied.
A Curry County canine handler and K9 officer Axel, were brought to the scene to conduct an article search for the suspected weapon. K9 officer Axel quickly searched the route where Munoz had been chased in the dark and located the suspect Smith and Wesson pistol where it had apparently been thrown during the chase.
Javier Munoz was booked into the Curry County Jail on charges Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Use of a Firearm, Carrying a Concealed Firearm, Resisting Arrest, and Menacing.
