Geogia Pacific publicly announced Thursday, April 11th, that after much consideration regarding their long term competitive position and the availability of raw materials in southwestern Oregon, Georgia Pacific has decided to close their Coos Bay lumber facility permanently.
Employees at Coos Bay were notified Thursday of the plans to cease operations within the next 60 days. This closure affects approximately 111 full-time employees.
Georgia Pacific stated that log exporting has reduced the availability of logs in the region that are economical to convert to lumber. Couple that with the unreliability of the rail service, makes continued operations untenable.
They also have made available numerous openings at other GP/Koch facilities throughout the Northwest and the country and are encouraging their Coos Bay employees to go to their website and apply for positions they find interesting.
Georgia Pacific will also be hosting a local job fair to be held in the next few weeks to assist employees with their job search.
