The Gold Beach High School Panther varsity football team started their 2021 season on the road, traveling to Myrtle Point/Powers to take on the Bobcats on a rainy wet Friday afternoon.
Both teams were ready play and the Panthers received the opening kick-off of their 2021 season. The Bobcat defense stood strong holding the Panthers to a 3 and out, forcing a punt after the first offensive series. The punt was returned by the Bobcat’s inside the Panther 15 yard line. The Bobcat’s first play from scrimmage was a quarterback sweep to the right, resulting in the first score of the contest putting Myrtle Point/Powers up 8-0 early.
The Panthers battled back with an 84 yard breakaway run from senior running back #33 Josh Rodriguez who would then put the ball into the endzone one play later after being tackled at the 1 yard line, tying the game at 8 early in the 2nd period.
However, the Bobcats would return the ensuing kick-off to the endzone, putting Myrtle Point/Powers up 16-8. And tough breaks kept coming for Gold Beach, as the Panthers would turnover the ball on the kick-off. The Bobcats then ran a quarterback sweep to the endzone, lengthening the Bobcats lead to 24-8.
The Gold Beach defense made consistently made stops keeping the Gold Beach offense in the game, and late in the game Panther junior quarterback Trenton Storns found sophomore running back Landyn Miller for a 30 yard pass for a late touchdown making the score 24-16.
The Bobcats would outlast the Panthers in an evenly matched contest, scoring late to make the final score 32-16. Head Coach Chris Higgins will take his Panther team on the road next Friday to visit the 1-0 Yoncalla/N.Douglas Eagles who shut out Glendale 36-0 on the road.
