Fishing Vessel Catches Fire at Sea

On Thursday afternoon May 2nd, a 64-foot fishing vessel, the Ann Kathleen out of Westport, Washington, caught fire while at sea off the coast south of Bandon. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the crew was forced to abandon the 64-foot wood and fiberglass fishing vessel.

Good Samaritans onboard the F/V Lynoma arrived on-scene first and pulled all the fishermen from their life raft to safety and no one was injured.

At low tide late that Thursday afternoon, the burning wreckage came ashore still on fire in a remote area north of Floras Lake. As of Friday officials reported that the wreckage of the Ann Kathleen was no longer burning.

The area in which the vessel came to rest and burned is a designated recovery area of the threatened western snowy plover.

Officials consisting of a local fire department, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and the U.S. Coast Guard will consider a “response plan” after an evaluation of the site for toxic materials.
