Fire in Jedediah Smith State Park Closes Hwy. 199

On Sunday, June 3rd, U.S. Hwy 199 was closed in both directions just outside Crescent City due to fire.

A large Redwood inside Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park was burning amongst the treetops and no official reason for its ignition has been given by authorities, however, it is believed to be from recent lightning strikes.

Local authorities quickly determined that the tree was burning from the inside out and needed to be removed to assure that it was completely extinguished.

A helicopter from the Department of Forestry made water drops to cool the tree before it was removed to ensure that fire did not spread into the surrounding wilderness area.

The tree was fell into the closed Hwy. 199 roadway and removed within a 6 hour period.
