Coos Forest Protective Association responded to a fire at 1:55 p.m. Sunday afternoon in the Lobster Creek drainage northeast of of Gold Beach. The fire reportedly started near the 4-H youth camp.
There are very limited details, however, the fire is estimated at over 300+ acres and gaining size quickly, and is zero percent contained.
As of 7:15 p.m. Sunday, it was unknown how the fire started, or if the campground itself had been damaged.
Resources from Coos Forest Protective Association, the Rogue River Siskiyou National Forest, and local fire districts consisting of hand crews, engines, a bulldozer, and helicopters are engaged on the fire. There are now three Single Engine Air Tankers, or SEATs working it loading out of Medford. More helicopters are being sent as well.
The road through the area is closed at Lobster Creek and North Bank roads. The group that had rented the camp facility were safely evacuated, and sheriff personnel spent the afternoon combing the local roads in the area to alert any others in the vicinity.
The “Lobster Creek FIre” is being driven by strong north winds with reported gusts of up to 35 mph that have been blowing on the southern coastal areas for the last few days.
