The Federal Bureau of Investigation addressed the near 90 days of civil unrest and demonstrations in the Portland area in a series of press releases beginning Thursday, August 20th.
The FBI reiterated its respect of the rights of individuals to peacefully exercise their First Amendment rights and that their mission of protecting the American people and upholding the Constitution is dual, simultaneous and not contradictory.
The release went on to say that they are committed to apprehending and charging violent instigators who are exploiting legitimate, peaceful protests and engaging in violations of federal law. The continued violence, potential threat to life, and destruction of property across the United States interferes with the rights and safety of First Amendment-protected peaceful demonstrators, as well as all other citizens.
In a Thursday press release the FBI announced that it’s Portland Field Office would be assisting partner agencies and asking for the public’s help in identifying the individuals who participated in criminal activity near or inside the Multnomah County Justice Center.
The FBI is asking for the public’s help identifing actors who are actively instigating violence in the city of Portland, and is accepting tips and digital media depicting violent encounters surrounding the civil unrest that is happening.
On Friday, August 21st, the FBI stated that they are aware of recent reporting regarding threats made against federal buildings in Portland and are investigating to determine the credibility of the threat while remaining in touch with other law enforcement partners to share information.
The FBI went on to say that they encourage people to remain vigilant and to promptly report suspicious activities which could represent a threat to public safety and that if information indicating a credible threat develops, the public will be notified.
