Fast Moving Central Point Brush Fire Causes Evacuations

At just before 5:00 pm Tuesday afternoon, a brush fire broke out near the Peninger exit in Central Point.

Erratic winds quickly drove the fire in many different directions simultaneously putting many structures in its immediate path. The fire quickly reached 50 acres and a level 3 evacuation was issued for surrounding neighborhoods as the flames spread east toward the Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, level 3 evacuations were ordered within a 2-mile radius of the Jackson County Expo. Vilas Road and Table Rock Road were closed for an extended period of time in that area.

The fire burned 97 acres and at the latest reports, late Tuesday evening fire crews had the at 100% containment.

Damage assessments include 5 out-buildings deemed a total loss, 1 out-building damaged, and 3 residences damaged. There have been no reported injuries.

Approx 60-70 Firefighters were on scene to control the fire, and crews were on scene throughout the night continuing mop up.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by Fire Investigators from Fire District 3 and Detectives from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
