RIVER RESCUE – JCSO marine patrol deputies, with help from Fire District 3 and Rogue River Fire personnel, rescued a family of four this afternoon in the Rogue River. The family’s canoe struck a rock broadside, collapsing the boat and stranding the family in the middle of the river near Savage Rapids County Park. The couple and their two children, 10 and 13, were able to call 911. Personnel deployed a jet boat and a raft. Everyone was wearing a life jacket; nobody was injured. Marine patrol deputies say this is an example of the importance of WEARING a life jacket, not just carrying one in your boat. In an emergency – especially in a fast-moving river – there is rarely enough time to put one on before you need it. Josephine County rescuers set up as “downstream safety” while the sheriff’s boat navigated in to extract the stranded family. No injuries were reported, and the parents did a great job keeping everyone calm.

Thankfully, all four people involved were wearing life jackets, which greatly contributed to the successful outcome of this incident.
