Falling Tree at Last Chance Grade Injures 3 Workers

U.S. Hwy. 101 at Last Chance Grade, was closed south of Crescent City just after noon Tuesday, March 17th, after a tree fell during work at the slide site.

Motorists were not driving in the construction zone when this incident occurred, and according to CalTrans, two contractors and a Caltrans employee were injured when a tree fell during removal and slide prevention work.

Hwy. 101 was fully closed as first responders arrived on scene and the 3 individuals were transported to a local hospital.

Caltrans announced that “traffic was moving” just before 1:45pm and that 24-hour surveillance of the area would continue with spotters and flaggers until work is completed.

The health and safety of the traveling public, department employees, and its contracting partners remains Caltrans’ top priority, and Caltrans is cooperating fully with Cal/OSHA on its investigation.
