The Bruin boys varsity baseball team earned homefield advantage going 10-5 in regular season play, positioning the #4 Bruins to host the La Pine Hawks in first round play.
The Hawks, traveling from just south of Sunriver, Oregon, came into the game ranked #10, on a two game win streak with a record of 6-6 in regular season play. Head coach Keith Wallin sent senior right-hander Jason DeShon to the mound for the Bruins, who retired the side in order. But the Hawks pitching proved to be problemary early on, retiring the Bruins in order off of 11 pitches.
The early innings became a pitching duel, as both teams continued to struggle at the plate, with the Hawks again going down in order. But the Bruins would get the first base runner on the basepaths in the bottom of the second after Seth Rosenberg, #28, singled off a ground ball to center field. But that would be all the Bruins would put together, failing to score and sending the game tied into the third inning.
Both teams continued to struggle at the plate, with La Pine failing to get a runner on base and remaining scoreless after 4 innings. But in the bottom of the fourth, the Bruin bats ended the pitching duel after a #5 Kyle Burger infield single to third base. Senior Jason DeShon then hit a double to right field, scoring Burger all the way from first.
With score now 1-0 Bruins going into the fifth, DeShon then pitched a shutdown top of the fifth, sitting Hawks batters down in order off of 11 pitches. The Bruins would get their lead-off batter after Kyler Christensen, #14, beat out an infield hit to first base. A Bryon Remington sacrifice bunt would put Christensen in scoring position, and then a deep fly over the right fielders head by #15, Seth Valliere, would score Christensen, giving the Bruins the 2-0 lead.
La Pine would get only their second baserunner on in the top of the sixth, off of a DeShon walk, but the 2 runs from the Bruin bats would prove to be enough for DeShon, who went 7 innings, allowing 1 hit, 2 walks, and no runs, striking out 12.
The Bruin boys post-season continues Friday afternoon, hosting the 10-2, #5 ranked Santium Christian Eagles, coming off a 3-1 win over Taft.
