The Bruin boys found their way into the win column again Friday night at home, hosting the Rogue River Chieftains, putting together a solid defensive and offensive effort against a solid Rogue River team.
In the opening period of play, the Bruins the Bruin defense dropped into a 2-3 zone pressuring Rogue River’s point, forcing the Chieftains out of their offense and breaking out on Rogue River missed opportunities. However, cold shooting and a lack of presence under the basket by the Bruins early, allowed the Chieftains to keep the game close with the score 10-9 Bruins at the mid way point of the first period. But the Bruin boys fought through the cold shooting led by junior forward, Austin Dietrich who hit four baskets for 8 points, to extend and early 16-9 lead after the first period.
In the second period, the Bruins stayed in their 2-3 zone, challenging every Chieftain shot, keeping Rogue River from establishing any offensive continuity, and continued to run on Cheiftain miscues. Junior forward, Kyler Christensen, #2, was the hot hand in the second for the Bruins with 5 points including a 3 pointer, and went 2 for 4 from the freethrow line. Defensively the Bruins held Rogue River to just 10 points in the second period, putting up 13 of their own to take a 29-19 lead into the half-time break.
In the third period, the Bruins continued to pressure the Cheiftains out of their 2-3 zone, forcing Rogue River into tough shooting situations and allowing only two Cheiftain baskets in the quarter. Four Bruins made it into the scorebook in the third, led again by Kyler Christensen, #2, and senior point guard Josh Serna, #32, who both hit for 5 points in the quarter including a Serna 3 pointer.
With a comfortable 44-24 lead going into the final period of play, the Bruins continue their game plan, offensively swinging the ball around the perimeter looking for Cheiftain weak spots before driving for mid range jumpers. Senior, #1, Kallen Christensen, put the finishing touches on the game with 7 points in the final period off of three hard fought baskets in the paint and a free throw as the Bruin boys put 13 points on the board in the fourth to take the 57-29 win.
The Bruins will be at home to face Coquille next Wednesday evening, hosting the 1-2 Red Devils at Bruin Arena at 5:30pm.
