Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office Arrests Two Allegedly Involved in July 4th Illegal Fireworks Explosion

The Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office has made two arrests following an ongoing investigation related to the explosion that occurred on July 4th, 2024.  

As reported on Saturday, July 6th, according to Crescent Fire and Rescue Chief Kevin Carey, an illegal fireworks display explosion on South Beach rocked Crescent City Thursday evening, July 4th, just before 10:30pm, sending multiple individuals to the hospital with many different injuries including a critically injuring young boy.  

The Del Norte County Sheriff”s office, in conjunction with Crescent Fire and Rescue Chief Kevin Carey, established a Unified Command Post as panic broke out after multiple collections of illegal fireworks were ignited and expended as crowds began to leave the official Crescent City fireworks presentation.  

A total of 14 victims were located and transported to Sutter Coast Hospital and many others were injured and chose not to be transported to the hospital after being assisted with various burns and cuts from fragments of debris from the blast.  

According to a July 11th, Thursday afternoon Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office press release, the subjects responsible for the illegal fireworks that caused the explosion immediately fled the scene.

After all of the explosion victims were triaged, treated and transported from the scene, Del Norte County Sheriff’s investigators continued collecting evidence including video footage, witness statements as well as a multitude of pictures and illegal fireworks ranging from store bought mortars to homemade style mortars in large PVC canisters, filling an entire F-150 pickup truck.  

As a result of the ongoing investigation, Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office has made two arrests following an ongoing investigation related to the explosion that occurred on July 4th, 2024.  

Both 32 year old Meagan Warner and 33 year old Levi Mills were arrested and are now lodged at the Del Norte County Jail.
