Early Tuesday afternoon, August 18th, the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office received a call reporting an overturned kayak near the B Street Pier in Crescent City.
Lieutenant Schneck and Civilian Boating Volunteer Charles Tweed responded in the Del Norte County Sheriff’s rescue raft and located the victim who was in the water clinging to the overturned kayak.
The responding rescuers rowed out to the capsized craft, extracted the victim from the water into the rescue raft, and returned to shore with the overturned kayak in tow. The victim was checked by Crescent Fire and Rescue and Del Norte Ambulance personnel for possible hypothermia before refusing further treatment.
As the first rescue was nearly complete, another call was received reporting a disabled vessel near Crescent Beach, over a mile away.
Four subjects were aboard a 19-ft. Bayliner that had lost power. They had no radio aboard the boat, but they were able to use a cell phone to call for help. They advised that they could see the shore and were south of Whaler’s Island.
The boat was visually located in dense fog outside the protected harbor and again Civilian Boating Volunteer Charles Tweed responded with the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Personal Water Craft to the drifting vessel and towed the boat to safety. There were no injuries reported.
