Confident Bruin Team Ready for Play-Offs

The Bruin defense allowed only 5 runs on the day.

After finishing the season strong with a 5 game winning streak and working themselves into post-season play, the Brookings-Harbor boys varsity baseball team found themselves with over a week off before their first ball game of post-season. Coach Keith Wallin not willing to go that long without game time situations, scheduled a non-league tune-up game with a 14-8 Cascade Christian Challengers team from the 3A-6 Southern Cascade League Wednesday afternoon.

The Bruins picked up right where they left off when Payton Armentrout started the game with a triple in the first at bat of the game. The Bruins would send 7 batters to the plate in the first half of the first scoring twice.

Roman Worthey with one of the Bruins 9 hits in the game.

In the bottom of the 1st the Bruin defense would make quick work of the Challengers allowing only 4 batters to plate. Roman Worthey toed the rubber for the Bruins and helped himself by turning a double play on a ball hit back to the mound and doubling up the runner at first.

A combination of 4 Bruin pitchers struck out 8 on the day.

Again in the top of the second, the Bruins sent 7 batters to the plate loading the bases and scoring 2 runs before recording the first out of the inning. After a 3 run top of the second, the Bruins ended the top of second-leading 5-1. But Cascade Christian, who also ended their season on a 5 game winning streak would come back in their half of the second sending 7 batters to the plate and scoring 3 runs of their own ending the 2nd inning 5-4 Bruins.

Both teams settled into their games for the next three innings with neither team allowing a score until the top of the 5th inning.

Jacob Racho taking his lead off of 3rd base on his way to scoring one of the Bruins 11 runs.

In the top of the 5th the Bruins would strike again scoring 4 runs off of a single, a double, and a triple after sending 7 batters to the plate. The Bruin defense then ended the 5th with a shutdown inning taking a 9-4 lead into the 6th.

The Bruins would score two more times in the sixth and would only allow one more run late in the game taking an 11-5 win on the bus ride home.

Coach Wallin got everybody involved in what would turn out to be an 11-5 win off of 9 hits from his offense followed up by a solid defensive effort that allowed only 5 runs and committing just 2 errors.

The 18-8 Far West league #2 Brookings-Harbor Bruins will host the 15-8 #3 Sweet Home Huskies this Friday evening at 5:00 pm at Bruin Field. Let’s pack the stands and help send our Bruins deeper into the post-season.
