Cold Air, Low Snow Elevations, and Rain, All in the Weekend Forecast

The weak system that moved into the region earlier in the week has opened the opportunity for an active weather pattern going into the remainder of the week. As the week progresses, it will become wetter and more active with snow levels gradually getting lower. Cold air is affiliated with this new trough moving into the area, with areas along the northern California and southern Oregon coast under a possible Freeze Watch with sub-freezing temperatures as low as 27 possible.

A cold system is forecast to arrive Thursday and into Thursday night, with snow levels possibly dropping to around 2000 feet, or even lower with light amounts of snow possibly making some roads and passes slick or snow covered. Another, stronger system is possible this weekend, and is expected to produce heavy mountain snows in some locations late Saturday through Sunday.

Inland communities could expect a chance of showers to start late Thursday afternoon, with snow levels falling between 1400 and 2000 feet as the day progresses, clearing to partly sunny skies Friday with another system moving into the area Saturday bringing cold rain and showers through Sunday. Temperatures will be very cool starting Thursday morning with highs only reaching the mid 40’s and lows falling to the low to mid 30’s through out the weekend.

Along the coast, southern coastal areas including northwestern California, cold temperatures have prompted a Frost Warning from late Thursday night through Friday morning. A slight chance of precipitation along the coast begins late Wednesday and early Thursday morning, leaving partly sunny days into Friday as another, colder system moves onshore bringing rain late Friday night and continuing through Sunday. Temperatures will be cooler than the past few days, with early morning lows in the mid to upper 30’s, and highs reaching the upper 40’s.
