At approximately 5:30 pm Thursday afternoon, U.S. Coast Guard Station North Bend received a report of a plane crash one mile north of the Brookings Airport. Cal Ore Life Flight witnessed the crash, immediately responded and located the aircraft.
The U.S. Coast Guard dispatched an MH65D helicopter to the scene and deployed the rescue swimmer to the crash site. The MH65D helicopter experienced an inflight emergency forcing them to land at the Brookings Airport rendering them unable to assist the rescue efforts. Unfortunately, the two individuals piloting the airplane perished in the crash and were recovered by local first responders.
