Late Christmas Eve just before mid-night, a pie in the oven almost spelled disaster on Christmas Eve for residents. Although the home had working smoke alarms, the occupants were alerted to the fire when smoke began filling the house.
Firefighters from Rural Metro arrived to find a fire in the wall and cabinets behind the oven, but were able to quickly stop the spread. Cause appeared to be related to an electrical short in an outlet.
After the fire was out, firefighters spent a considerable amount of time cleaning up water and debris damage caused by the ordeal. With the use of wet vacs, squeegees and mops, the extra effort ensured the family was not displaced during the holiday.
Rural Metro Fire was assisted on the scene by mutual aid crews from Applegate Valley Fire District and Grants Pass Department of Public Safety.
Fires caused by cooking are common this time of year, and it’s vital to be prepared for anything. Working smoke alarms, fire extinguishers and keeping an eye on any cooking are basic fundamentals of prevention and preparedness.
