Carr Fire over 100,000 acres / Mendocino Complex Update

Although the winds of the Carr Fire have shifted, it still continues to grow at enormous rates, adding another 22,900 acres since Sunday evening now reaching 103,780 acres.

The Shasta County sheriff said at a news conference on Sunday that another person had lost their life, making the death toll of the Carr Fire 6. The latest victim was found after the fire consumed the person’s home. Seven people are still reported missing.

As seen above, the northern portions of the fire remained active throughout the day. Firefighters continued to construct containment and contingency lines reaching pprosximately 25% containment.

Tragically, 818 residences, 3 commercial structures, 311 outbuildings have been destroyed. 167 residences, 5 commercial structures, and 37 outbuildings have suffered different levels of damage and 4,046 Structures remain threatened.

Evacuation orders have been lifted for Douglas City, as well as portions of Happy Valley, Shasta Lake City, and Redding.

Fire officials expect winds to increase late last night and into this morning. Hot and dry weather, previously unburned fuels, and steep terrain will continue to contribute to fire growth. Crews will work to mitigate spot fire potential across control lines.

Firefighters continue to battle the River and Ranch fires off Highway 20 near Potter Valley, northeast of Ukiah. The 68,487 acre fire is 5% contained and continues to burn aggressively when in alignment with wind, fuel and topography.

The 45,067 acre Ranch Fire to the north and the 23,411 acre River Fire south of Clear Lake in Mendocino County, started just over 1 hour apart July 27th. The cause of the fires are under investigation.

So far, since the 68,500 acre fires started just 4 days ago, the fast-moving blazes have destroyed 7 residences and 3 outbuildings and are currently threatening 10,200 structures.

Thousands are displaced in both Mendocino and Lake Counties through mandatory evacuations and dozens of roads are closed. 2,000 firefighters are currently assigned to fire complex with 206 engines, with 43 water tankers, 12 helicopters, 45 dozers, and numerous firefighting air tankers are flying suppression missions as weather and smoke conditions allow.

Firefighters were also challenged by long distance spotting. Weather conditions will continue to challenge firefighters as hot, dry and windy conditions persist.
