Earlier in the week, head coach Keith Wallin’s BHHS Bruin varsity baseball team became the 2021 3A-SD4 Special District 43A-SD4 Special District 4 Champions with a perfect 12-0 record going into Tuesday afternoons contest against the Sutherlin Bulldogs.
Coach Wallin sent his ace, senior Adam Shew #13 to the mound for the Bruins and though 6 Bulldog batters got to the plate, the Bruins went to the plate in the bottom of the 1st 0-0.
The Bruin offense started early, loaded up the basses after two Bruin batters were hit, and the third batter got on from an error, sending senior Andrew Burger #29 to the plate with the bases full of Bruins. Burger saw one pitch, and sent it screaming out of the park for a grand-slam home-run clearing the bags. The Bruins would put up 5 runs on the inning.
Shew allowed two base-runners in the top of the 2nd, hitting a batter and walking a batter, before striking out the side to end any Bulldog threat.
Bruin pitching and fielding kept the Bulldogs from getting any consistent offense together. Sutherlin could not get runners on the basepaths, and they could not keep Bruins off the basepaths.
By the bottom of the 3rd inning, the Bruins had sent more than 30 batters to the plate, Andrew Burger had hit 2 home-runs, and Adam Shew had retired 14 Bulldog batters, striking-out 7.
Talking with coach Wallin after the game, he told the Compass “Guys did a great job of being patient offensively today… We had great swings with runners on today. Our seniors have truly put together one of the most impressive resumes our school has ever seen and we look forward to trying to send them out the right way.”
The Bruins travel to Sutherlin Friday to close out the 2021 season with a chance at preserve a unblemished season if they can take both games of Friday afternoons regular season ending double-header.
