At approximately 11:45 a.m., firefighters responded to a report of a grass fire at the 1200 block of Thompson Creek Road in the Applegate. Crews found a wind-driven grass fire traveling quickly uphill.
More than a dozen fire apparatus including engines, water tenders, and a dozer were able to get a line around the fire holding it to approximately 11 acres. Due to the quick and aggressive initial attack by the first responding engines from Applegate Valley Fire District, firefighters were able to get the upper hand on the fire while additional resources arrived. We are always appreciative of our fire partners that allow us to be so successful during fire season.
Although structures were initially threatened, none were lost or damaged in this fire. In addition, there were no firefighter or public injuries. One lane of Thompson Creek Road was shut down for fire traffic, and will remain blocked likely until sundown. Please use caution when using this road this afternoon.
The grass fire was caused by mowing equipment. Although members of the public can still mow dry, dead grasses according to the current Fire Season restrictions in place, ODF is still advising that everyone use caution when addressing patches of grass that may already be dried out. Having a charged water hose nearby as the conditions continue to heat up is advised.
