The Brookings Harbor Varsity Boys Basketball team tipped off their first home game of the season in a preseason match-up against the Hidden Valley Mustangs.
Coach Buell Gonzales Jr. had his team fired up and ready to go as they took to the hardwood against a physically intimidating Hidden Valley Mustang team featuring five players over six feet and 4 of those players over six foot two inches tall.
The Bruins wasted no time jumping out to a quick lead in the first quarter of play attacking the basket and taking a 13-8 lead in the first quarter. The Bruins started in their 2-3 zone defense but switched in and out of a match-up zone periodically which caught the Mustangs off guard on more than one occasion.
The Mustangs would make a run early in the second period getting within 2 points of the Bruins with 4:25 left in the first half. However the Bruins would have an 11 point second quarter, and take a 24-17 lead into the half.
Brookings-Harbor fearlessly challenged the taller Mustang team inside throughout the game using their speed to drive inside and their strength on the boards to control the boards. Combined with a stifling defense to start the third period the Bruins would go on a 9 point run separating themselves from the Mustangs 33-17 with 4:00 left in the third quarter.
The match-up zone defense of the Bruins confused the Mustangs and the Bruins would take command of the game 41-28 with 5:30 left in the game. The Mustangs were forced to foul the Bruins inside late in the fourth period putting the Bruins on the free throw line where the Bruins hit their shots.
The Mustangs would mount a late fourth quarter rally, but the Bruins would go on to to win the contest 48-36.
