Friday afternoon the Bruins varsity baseball team welcomed the Douglas Trojans to Bruin field. The Bruins, who defeated Douglas at Douglas earlier in the week 6-4, split a doubleheader Friday with the Bruins taking 2 of 3 games in the series.
In the early game, after out hitting the Trojans 6 to 3, the Bruins lost the lead late after Trojan Gabe Burke singled in the top of the 6th putting Douglas ahead by 1.
In the first inning, Bruins pitcher freshman Adam Shew #13 took the mound and struck out the side. In the bottom of the 1st, the Douglas pitcher hit senior Cody Testa putting him on first. After senior Roman Worthey advanced the runner to 2nd base with a single on a hard ground ball to left fielder, junior Jon Kleespies #28 got the games first RBI with a line drive to left field putting the Bruins on the board first.
In the top of the 2nd, Bruins pitcher Adam Shew picked up right where he left off in the first by striking out the side again, recording 6 strikeouts in the first 2 innings.
It wouldn’t be until the top of the fourth inning that Douglas tied things up at one after an infield groundout and Bruin error scoring one run. Trojan pitcher senior Jace Johnson then pitched a shutdown inning of his own striking out the Bruin side in the bottom of the 4th.
After Douglas scored one run in the top of the fifth, the Bruins answered with one of their own when Justin Vanginderen singled on the first pitch of the at-bat scoring one run after Manny Zamora crossed the plate.
Douglas pitcher Jace Johnston was credited with the victory for Douglas after going five innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out four.
The Bruins Adam Shew took the loss for Bruins after pitching a complete game going seven innings, allowing three hits and three runs while striking out nine. Kleespies went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Bruins Baseball in hits as the Bruins dropped the first game 4-2 to the Trojans.
In the later game, Bruins pitcher senior Roman Worthey #11 took the mound and the Trojans picked up right where they left off at the end of the early game. Trojan Jace Johnson started off with a single, a stolen base and later crossing the plate to put the Trojans up 1-0.
In the bottom of the 2nd the game would change when Justin Vanginderen stepped up to the plate and squared up a long, high and majestic 300 ft. home run off of Trojan pitcher Austin West.
Manny Zamora drove in Payton Armentrout in the bottom of the 3rd with a hard line drive to center field after a Payton Armentrout single and stolen base.
Bruins pitcher Roman Worthey kept the Trojans off the base paths with strong pitching mixing up placement and speed and getting the Bruins to the bottom of the 4th.
In the Bruins offensive part of the 4th inning, the Bruins brought 7 batters to the plate and put 2 runs up off of Douglas pitcher Austin West.
Douglas would not recover from the Bruins offense output in the late game as Bruin pitchers Roman Worthey and Andrew Burger shut down the Trojans in the later innings. Worthey earned the win allowing four hits and one run over six innings while striking out eight.
The Bruins saw the ball well in the second game of the afternoon racking up 11 hits in the game. Kleespies, Testa, Vanginderen, and Zamora all had two hits in the Bruins 8-3 win.
