Head Coach Jess Beaman and his 2-3 BHHS Bruin varsity basketball team took on the 1-3 Lancers from South Umpqua Tuesday night and snapped a two game losing streak.
The Bruins and the Lancers set the pace early, running on each others defense until the Bruins started their 2-3 pressure zone defense that slowed the Lancers. Early in the first period both teams were tied at 5 apiece, and after the Bruin press, the Bruins began to take a lead. The Bruin offense put 18 points on the board led by senior guard Evan Fronckowiak #12 and junior forward #33 Logan Holler who each forced the ball into the lane for 8 points each in the period.
The Bruin defense was relentless, trapping the Lancers, forcing bad shots and South Umpqua turnovers. The Lancers tightened their defense and the Bruin offense had four players hit buckets in period. The Lancers clearly had no option but to foul to slow the Bruins and the Bruins got to the line 10 times in the period, hitting 3 of 10 and putting 12 points up in the quarter.
The Bruin defense was unforgiving in the second period allowing only 1 point in the period off of a free throw. The Bruins took a comfortable 14 point lead into the half time break, leading 30-16.
The Lancers started the second half down 14, but determined to close the gap and get back in the game. The Lancers rode the hot hand of sophomore Kade Johnson #1 who led all scorers in the third period with 12 points that included three 3’s and buckets in the key.
The Bruins came out in the third period much like they did in first, overwhelming defense and driving to the basket. Four Bruins got on the scoreboard in the third period, again junior forward #33 Logan Holler and senior guard Evan Fronckowiak #12 led the way as each hit for 6 points in the period. Junior center Derek Tuttle #20 took control of the key in the third period hitting a bucket at the rim and going 2 of 4 from the free throw line.
The Bruins took a 15 point lead into the final quarter leading 49-34. The Bruins spread the ball out in the fourth, getting eight players in the scorebook. Bruin forward Oggie Badger #25 led the way hitting two 3’s for 6 of the Bruins 26 points in the fourth, helping the Bruins to a 74-54 win.
The Bruins will be at home again this Friday evening when they take on the now 5-0 Cascade Christian Challengers at Bruin Arena at 7:00pm.
