Bruins Secure Dominating Win Against St. Mary’s

Bruin football was on the road to Medford to challenge the St. Mary’s Crusaders in their final preseason match-up Friday evening, before league plays begins next week.

In the first period of play, the Bruins received the kick and had the first opportunity to put points on the board, however, both teams would exchange punts after their first offensive series. A holding call would nullify a 52 yard quarterback sneak by sophomore quarter back Grady Maylin, #12, and ultimately both teams would keep each other out of the endzone to end the first period tied at 0-0.

The second quarter of play was quite different, starting with yet another 60 yard run by #34,junior running back Jonathan Devereaux, being called back after an illegal block in the back, before senior running back #8, Michael Variteck finished the long drive by the Bruin offense with a 25 yard run to the endzone, giving the Bruins the 0-6 lead in the second period.

St. Mary’s would suffer the flags also, after a 41 yard pass play to answer the Bruins last drive would be called back, forcing the Crusaders to punt to the Bruins. The Bruin offense would waste no time, running the option sweep to the right side, and sophomore running back Owen Austin, #10 would take the ball 71 yards to the endzone, giving the Bruins a 0-14 lead after the 2 point conversion.

The Bruin defense would stop another Crusader drive with less than three minutes in the half, and again the Bruin offense would attack, scoring again before the half after quarter back Grady Maylin, #12, hit #34, running back Jonathan Devereaux on a post pattern over the middle for another 60 yard touchdown, and a 0-20 lead going into the locker room at the half-time break.

St. Mary’s wasn’t quite done, coming out after the break and immediately hitting a running back out on the flat that would result in a 71 yard touchdown play making the score 7-20, Bruins. Maylin would then drop back and throw a Bruins interception, turning the ball over to the Crusaders in Bruin territory.

Leading 7-20 to start the fourth quarter, the Bruins would put together a long sustained drive, ending with a 21 yard quarterback sneak by sophomore quarter back, #12, Grady Maylin, extending the Bruin lead to 7-27. The Bruins would put together another long drive ending with another Maylin 24 yard scoring run making the score 7-34. The Crusaders would get on the board with less than 2:00 minutes in the game making the final score 14-34.

“Big win on the road for the program tonight,” coach Bavaro said after the game. “The kids flew around, the defense played well tonight and we did enough on offense to get out to a decent lead. Very happy with their effort these last couple of weeks.”

The Bruins will start league play next Friday at home, taking on the Coquille Red Devils, traveling to Brookings coming off a two game win streak, with kick off set for 7:00pm.
