Coach Gonzales’ BHHS Bruin boys varsity team came into the gym Tuesday night with a bad taste in their mouth from Friday nights last-second loss to Sutherlin, and took it out on the St. Mary’s Crusaders. It was clear Coach Gonzales had his team ready and started off with a 2-3 press after the tip to set the tempo of the game.
As the first quarter began to play out, it looked as if we were going to see another low scoring defensive battle with the score just 6-3 Bruins midway through the first. The Bruins had five players in the scorebook putting up a total of 9 points in the quarter with the defense holding the Crusaders to just 3 points until 1:20 left in the period.
In the second period, senior forward Brig Schofield led Bruins scoring sinking to shots and two free throws for 6 of the Bruins 17 points in the period. Senior Luke Beaman #0 dropped a 3 pointer and went one of two from the free throw line with 4 points in the period. With the Crusaders adding 12 points to their total in the second period, the Bruins took a 26-18 point lead to the locker room at the break.
In the third period the Crusaders decided to take advantage of their size with 6′-2″ forward Francis Okeyia and 6′-5″ Trevahn Foster who scored 10 points and 6 points respectively of the 21 points the Crusaders put on the board. The Crusaders consistently dumped the ball in the paint forcing the Bruins to try to defend or foul to stop them from scoring. However, Coach Gonzales managed to get his inside players to weather the storm, and held their own in the defensive paint while adding 14 of their own points in the period led by 6 tough points inside by the Bruins sophomore forward #1 Logan Holler.
But the third period was just the opening act for Holler, who put his big boy pants on in the fourth period and relentlessly drove into the paint taking vicious fouls while sinking two shots and getting to the line 6 times sinking 5 for his 9 points in the period. Senior guard Eli Mills #3 sunk a timely 3 pointer and Schofield also got to the line 3 times going 2 for 3 from the line. The Bruins sent the Crusaders forward Francis Okeyia #11 to the line six times in the period who went 0 for 6 from the line and holding the Crusaders to just 10 points in the period.
After what turned out to be an exciting game with the Crusaders closing the gap to within 3 points in the fourth, the Bruins outscored the Crusaders 16-10 in the final period and left the floor with a 56-49 win. “We pulled it out” said Coach Gonzales after the game.
Coach Gonzales and his Bruins will take their game on the road this Friday traveling to South Umpqua at 6:00pm.
