Bruins Football Struggles Against the Warriors

The Bruin Defense lines up against the Warriors of Del Norte.

On Friday night Brookings-Harbor Bruin Football went on the road to Crescent City matched up against the Del Norte Warriors.

The Bruins defense held the Warriors in the first possession making Del Norte punt the ball away. The punt pinned the Bruins deep in their own territory which allowed the Warriors to blitz and penetrate into the Bruin backfield stopping Brig Schofield in the end zone to start the scoring with a Del Norte Safety.

Just one play after the Bruin safety punt, the Warrior outside receiver broke away from coverage and took a short pass 60 yards to the end zone putting the Bruins down 8-0.

The bigger experienced line of the Warriors piled up in the middle consistently breaking through the Bruin line and into the backfield disrupting the Bruin running game throughout the contest. After holding the Bruins to a 3 and out, Del Norte took the ball on an end around and outran the Bruin defense 55 yards to the end zone, putting the Bruins down 14-0 with six minutes remaining in the 1st period.

With that overwhelming start to the game, the Warriors did not look back, focused on defense and denied the end zone to the Bruins, finishing the first half 28-0.

Again penalties hurt the Bruins throughout, coming at key times killing drives and robbing the Bruins of big plays and momentum. The Bruin defense kept their heads up and a positive attitude that helped keep the Warriors from running up the score.

After last Friday evenings 26-6 win against the Gold Beach Panthers, the Bruins have experienced being on “both ends of a game” in the matter of a weeks time said Coach Bavaro. Keeping things positive, Coach Bavaro plans on using the past weeks highs and lows as a “teaching moment and learning experience”. After the game, Coach Bavaro told the Wild Coast Compass “We will keep our heads up, learn from this, and continue to push forward…We have a lot of football left to play!”.

The Bruins will take the 35-0 loss on the road with them next week in another non-league preseason game as they take on the Rogue River Chieftans in Rogue River next Friday evening at 7:00pm.
