Bruins Football Handles Rogue River

The Bruins varsity football team traveled to Rogue River to take on the 2-0 Chieftains in an unusual Saturday evening match-up.

The Bruins, still feeling the sting of last Friday evenings 35-0 defeat to a strong Del Norte Warrior team, walked onto the field with a different level of determination.

Just 1:40 into the game sophomore linebacker #42 Derek Bonde recovers a Chieftain fumble, turning the ball over to the Bruin offense deep in Rogue River territory. The Bruins offense made quick work of the turnover scoring on 25 yard pass play from sophomore quarterback Andrew Burger to wide-out Derek Bonde putting the Bruins up 7-0 really early in the first period.

After another Bruin defensive stop, the Bruins put together a 60 drive consuming clock and ending with pass from Burger to a quick slant by wide receiver Manny Zamora into the corner of the endzone resulting in a 14-0 lead that the Bruins would never relinquish.

The second quarter started much like the first as sophomore linebacker #11 Logan Holler fell on a fumble early in the quarter leading to a long time consuming drive finished off by a 1 yard dive by running back #2 Brig Schofield giving the Bruins a 22-0 lead at the half.

The scoring would end when early in the fourth period sophomore defensive back #1 Kelvon’te Dawsey, picked off a Chieftain pass and returned it to the endzone making the final score 29-0.

As a team the Bruins cut out the self inflicted wounds from penalty flags, keeping Bruin drives alive, and not helping Rogue River stay on the field with second chances. The Bruin defense was strong and prepared, shutting down the Chieftain offense with out allowing Rogue River to sustain any lengthy drives throughout the evening.

After the game, the Compass caught up to Coach Bavaro to get his take on the game, “Overall I’m happy for the team, they have battled some adversity early in the season and continue to work”. He continued, “we worked the defense all week on pressuring the quarterback and pushing him to the sidelines which the defensive coaches made happen tonight”.

The defense kept Rogue River’s offense off the field and “Burger took advantage and made some great reads and throws in passing game” Coach Bavaro said. “Every week the games get bigger.., and that’s the way we want to run our program” he went on to say.

The Bruins will host the Honkers from Lakeview next Friday evening in their first home-game of the season at 7:00pm.
